Swiss rail manufacturer Stadler has been awarded a €700 million contract by Cologne’s public transport operator, Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe (KVB), to deliver 132 high-floor light rail vehicles as part of a major fleet modernization initiative.
Tailored Design and Enhanced Capacity
The new vehicles are custom-designed for Cologne’s light rail network and feature a modular configuration. Each train can be extended to approximately 70 meters using 34 ten-meter intermediate modules, enabling a maximum passenger capacity of up to 470. The first ten vehicles and five modules are scheduled for delivery in 2029 for pre-series operation, with full series delivery planned between mid-2030 and the end of 2032.
Advanced Technology and Passenger Comfort
The fleet will incorporate cutting-edge features including:
- Collision warning and rear-view video systems for enhanced driver safety
- Hybrid wheels with aluminum rim rings to reduce weight and noise
- Energy-efficient air conditioning and LED lighting
- Integrated passenger counting systems with evaluation software
- Spacious interiors with wide aisles and large 29-inch passenger information displays
Strategic Investment in Sustainable Mobility
KVB CEO Stefanie Haaks emphasized the significance of the project:
“The city council’s approval of this important project gives us planning security. We are grateful for the financial support, which sends a positive signal for the implementation of the mobility transition and strong public transport”.
The new vehicles will gradually replace the aging 2200/2300 and 5100 series trains and operate on lines 4, 13, and 18. Stadler will also provide long-term maintenance and technical support throughout the fleet’s projected 30-year service life.
